Description
"Development of a Universal minimal polymerase"
by
Rafal Wieczorek
European Centre for Living Technology
ABSTRACTFirst cells that emerged from prebiotic soup had to be much more primitive than even simplest ones of today world. It is agreed that their actions had to be less precise and less effective. Therefore the operating agents that they used – enzymes – had to be much more primitive than the enzymes from modern cells. Those enzymes were formed by much shorter peptides, were less specific for substrates and had much lower reaction rates. Recreation of those “first enzymes” has to be one of the key points in bottom-up approach to protocells/minimalcells. Experimental investigation on one of those possible “first enzymes” will be presented. Activity of this enzyme can be described as an “universal polymerase”, being able to catalyse condensation reactions of peptides and possible also nucleic acids. Thus performing crucial task necessary in complexity enrich of its primordial environment.
