CURRICULUM VITAE
Position
PostDoctoral Fellow - Department of Environmental Sciences, University Ca' Foscari of Venice
Research Area
System and Synthetic Biology
Focus Area
Phylogenetics relationships among freshwater and marine species such as fishes, crayfish, crabs, clams. Identification of unknown species, stocks and populations through molecular investigation and barcoding.
Short Bio
Stefania Chiesa is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the LivingTech Laboratory at the European Centre for Living Technology and the University of Venice “Cà Foscari”. She obtained her bachelor degree at University of Roma Tre (Italy) in Biological Sciences, and obtained a Ph.D. in “Biodiversity and Analysis of Ecosystems” from the same University under the supervision of Prof. Giancarlo Gibertini, in collaboration with the University of Parma (Italy) under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Nonnis Marzano. She investigated the distribution and ecology of freshwater fish and crayfish species, focusing on diet, reproduction and growth, using also histological techniques. Then she focused her work on the introduction of alien species, their interactions and effects on the freshwater native fauna, and its conservation. She also applied molecular techniques, such as RFLP, AFLP, microsatellites, and sequencing of mitochondrial genes for barcoding, identification of unknown species and stocks, and to infer phylogenetics and biogeographic relationships among native and introduced fish, crayfish, crab and clams species. She is now primarily interested in molecular genetics and its application in conservation genetics and in seafood traceability.
